Finite elements analysis for large strain consolidation of satured clays under equilibrium conditions

A large strain consolidation finite element study of a saturated clay layer fully consolidated and in equilibrium under both its own weight and a vertical effective stress acting on its upper surface is presented. The investigation is based on results obtaincd via a finite element program which was developed specifically for this study.

Comparisons with finite element results procured from conventional TERZAGHI [1923] theory indicates that finite strain theory predicts settlements to be more rapid than those from the conventional theory. Moreover conventional theory has the capacity to significantly underestimate thc excess pore water pressure and therefore overestimate the shear strength, if an effective stress analysis is used. This is in accordance with the finite element simulations which corroborate the findings in the literature.
